Telephony Online - A-IMS won't change softswitch market goals

A-IMS won't change softswitch market goals
August 14, 2006
…“The A-IMS activity is good, but fundamentally won't change IMS in the short term. So I don't think it will be affecting anyone's development plans,” said Grant Henderson, co-founder and executive vice president of marketing and strategy at Convedia.

Henderson said that, in principle, A-IMS has a lot of validity because IMS is a work in progress, but he echoes the concern of others that efforts are being duplicated as they are already being addressed within the standards bodies and he said that the split in the wireless market between GSM and CDMA came about in the same way.

“I applaud the activity, provided the work is presented to the standards bodies as contributions,” Henderson said. “But I would be very concerned if these vendors, in fact, tried to create a fractional division away from IMS, because the beauty of IMS and the beauty of GSM is that they can — and should — be a truly global and unifying standard.”…

VoIP: Friend or Foe for Wireless
June 1, 2006
...Grant Henderson, executive vice president of the media server company Convedia, says wireless carriers need to be concerned that their basic voice service is becoming commoditized. Convedia intros new media server on eXMP
April 4, 2006
In order to address the sophistication required for IP media processing solutions in an IMS architecture, Convedia announced CMS-3000 and CMS-9000 Media Servers based on its eXtended Media Processing technology. Convedia EVP of Marketing and Strategy Grant Henderson told me that the DSPs and processor chipsets address the modularity required for simple IVRs, middle VoiceXML and higher video processing needs, providing better economics and price per port. The new platforms are also fully backwards compatible with existing Convedia media server deployments. The CMS-9000 is a carrier-class media server optimized for large IMS network deployments, and the CMS-3000 Media Server is an entry-level media server for enterprise and smaller IMS network deployments...

The eXMP technology initially will be deployed in servers, but will extend to software media server products and Convedia-manufactured DSP accelerator cards. Convedia plans to introduce optimized blades for ATCA and other blade server architectures in 2007.

“This is really Convedia’s take on building carrier class servers,” said Grant Henderson, executive vice president of marketing and strategy for Convedia. “We made it very versatile in how it can be deployed in our platforms and third-party platforms.”...

Convedia Sets New Standards with IMS-Optimized Media Servers
April 3, 2006
The convergence of the telecommunications industry around the IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) architecture has necessitated greater complexity in IP media processing solutions. Fixed, mobile, and cable service providers deploying IMS and pre-IMS services need solutions to reduce service delivery costs and to hasten time to market of new voice, video, and multimedia services.

In addressing these latest requirements, Convedia, a global provider of IP media processing for VoIP and IMS networks, has unveiled the newest members of its hardware family: The CMS-3000 and CMS-9000 Media Servers. The two new products are based on a new, modular hardware platform incorporating the latest DSPs and processor chipsets. They are the first products to be based on Convedia’ s recently-announced eXtended Media Processing (eXMP) technology.
