CommWorks Corporation creates new compatibility program for IP telephony equipment vendors

Program addresses critical issue for IP telephony market; ten leading companies will participate in initial round of testing.

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL – March 20, 2001 - CommWorks Corporation, a leading provider of carrier-class Internet protocol (IP) telephony equipment, today introduced its CommWorks® Compatible program for IP telephony vendors. The program showcases IP telephony vendor solutions that are technically compliant with the CommWorks architecture, the company’s flexible, open system for the delivery of enhanced voice and data services through dial, wireless, broadband and narrowband access.

Ten leading providers of hardware and software for the IP telephony market will participate in the first round of CommWorks Compatible testing, the company, a wholly owned subsidiary of 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS), announced today. These companies include Convedia Corporation, HearMe, Indigo Software, Mediatrix Telecom, Inc., NextTone Communications, Pingtel, 3Com Corporation, Ubiquity Software Corporation, VegaStream, Ltd., and Voyant Technologies, Inc

"Interworking and mediation among products and technologies is essential for the widespread deployment and acceptance of IP telephony," said Irfan Ali, president, CommWorks Corporation. "The CommWorks Compatible program targets technical compliance among vendors as a critical component in ensuring the success of IP telephony and in building a new class of telecommunication services."

CommWorks is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of carrier-class IP telephony hardware and software. CommWorks IP telephony deployments are carrying more than 230 million minutes of voice traffic per month for service providers in North America, Europe and Asia, and have now exceeded 1.3 billion minutes of total voice traffic worldwide. These service providers use the IP telephony solution from CommWorks to offload voice traffic from the circuit-switched public switched telephone network (PSTN) to more efficient IP networks, and to introduce new and enhanced telephony services to their customers.
