Open Telecommunications and Convedia partner to provide scaleable next-generation enhanced service solutions.

NORTH SYDNEY, Australia – March 19, 2001 - Open Telecommunications (OT), a leading supplier of softswitch solutions for convergent networks, today announced that it has entered into an interoperability and co-marketing agreement with Convedia Corporation, the leading supplier of carrier-class softswitch media servers.

Under the terms of the agreement, both companies will work together to integrate Convedia’s CMS-6000 Media Server with OT’s openCallAgent softswitch. The integration effort is expected to be completed in the second quarter and the combined OT solution will be jointly marketed by both companies to service providers worldwide.

"Service providers are growing increasingly dependant on enhanced services to preserve margins and differentiate themselves in today’s deregulated and global telecommunications marketplace," said Dr Ray Freeman, general manager, Packet Telephony Group at Open Telecommunications.

"By adding support for Convedia’s CMS-6000 Media Server, Open Telecommunications will provide improved Class 5 and enhanced service requirements for our customers as they migrate to packet-based voice networks and services.

"The combination of our respective products and expertise is an excellent example of how open standards protocols such as MGCP allow best-in-class products from multiple vendors to be rapidly combined to create one of the most scaleable and cost effective voice over packet enhanced service solutions in the market."

OT’s openCallAgent can be deployed to suit a variety of network architectures, including:
  • Transit Networks: The openCallAgent may be used to manage calls in large packet based networks or gateway situations as an enhanced equivalent of transit or Class 4 switches.
  • Local Networks: The openCallAgent may be configured to support connections to end customers as an enhanced equivalent of a local or Class 5 switch.
  • Broadband Access Networks: TheopenCallAgent uses Cablelabs’ "PacketCable 1.0" standard to offer Cable operators the opportunity to combine traditional telephony and high-speed data services on a cable network infrastructure. TheopenCallAgent also provides support for DSL networks, enabling toll-quality VoIP to be carried over a copper-based DSL broadband infrastructure.
  • Mobile and Wireless Networks: The openCallAgent can provide IS95/IS2000 Mobile Switching Center (MSC) functionality for mobile networks. This includes support for Third Generation (3G) and Second Generation (2G) networks, enabling the use of packet telephony between Base Station Controllers (BSCs) and gateways with existing circuit switched networks.

These openCallAgent network applications can be deployed separately or in combination for a comprehensive packet telephony solution.

"We have been impressed with the breadth of Open Telecommunications’ product offering and strong international customer base. We look forward to working closely with OT to offer service providers a feature rich and scaleable solution for enhanced packet voice services," said Grant Henderson, vice president of product management and marketing at Convedia.

"This partnership further demonstrates Convedia’s commitment to leading the market in open, standards compliant media processing platforms for next generation enhanced applications and services."

Convedia's CMS-6000 Media Server is the industry’s first carrier-class Voice-over-IP enhanced service media processor and can be used in a broad range of traditional and emerging enhanced services delivered over xDSL, Cable, Fiber, Wireless and traditional networks.

Designed for next generation packet networks, the CMS-6000 gives service providers a modular, softswitch-compliant platform for delivering media-intensive, real-time enhanced services such as multimedia conferencing, speech processing, interactive voice response (IVR), unified messaging, and announcement services.

Delivering up to 18,000 ports in a single shelf, Convedia’s CMS-6000 offers unparalleled scalability, performance and reliability.
