Convedia and Syndeo partner to integrate Media Server/Softswitch products

Joint solution will help large-scale VoIP networks deploy advanced Class 5 telephony features, including IVR, unified messaging, multimedia conferencing.

PHOENIX, AZ. March 20, 2001 - Syndeo Corporation and Convedia Corporation, leading suppliers of softswitch and media server technology, respectively, have launched a product integration effort that will enable service providers to bring the most advanced Class 5 telephony features to large-scale networks in a cost-effective manner.

The joint development project will result in the first complete integration of a line-side, carrier-class Class 5 softswitch, Syndeo's Syion 426™, with a third-generation, carrier-class media server, Convedia's CMS-6000. The CMS-6000 hardware, serving as a fast, highly scalable resource for the execution of Class 5 line-side services running on the Syion 426, will enable Packet Cable-based cable MSOs and other service providers to offer services that require intensive real-time media processing. The Convedia and Syndeo systems will communicate through industry-standard Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) interfaces designed into both products.

The integration effort will occur in two phases: Class 5 announcement server and interactive voice response (IVR) functionality will be available early in the second quarter of 2001; multimedia conferencing and advanced audio server capabilities as defined by the PacketCable specification will be available by the end of the third quarter. Ultimately the combined solution will also offer such advanced features as text-to-speech conversion, automatic speech recognition, and other integrated video/multimedia services.

Jeff Paine, Syndeo vice president of marketing, said, "Fulfilling the potential of IP networks in primary-line environments requires a powerful network-wide software-controlled resource for media services. Recognizing this, the International Softswitch Consortium has made the media server a prescribed component of its softswitch architecture and mandated a standard MGCP interface between the two. Our Syion 426 platform will be the first line-side softswitch that is truly integrated with a media server dedicated exclusively to processing media scalably and cost-effectively. This alliance will let our customers deliver increasingly media-rich services to a wide variety of multi-protocol end devices, including standard phones connected to Packet Cable NCS MTAs, H-323 devices and SIP phones."

Grant Henderson, vice president of product management and marketing at Convedia, said, "Together Syndeo and Convedia are working to create and market the most comprehensive Class 5 solution available for the voice-over-packet market. The combination of a powerful primary-line softswitch and highly scalable media server will be critical in the residential market, where providers are catering to tens of thousands of subscribers and are constantly challenged to differentiate themselves with ever more sophisticated services."

About Syndeo

Syndeo Corporation was formed in 1999 to help broadband local-loop carriers better manage, differentiate and profit from service offerings as they move to next-generation converged voice-over-IP (VoIP) and voice-over-ATM (VoATM) networks. The company's Syion 426 Local Exchange Platform replaces Class 5 switch functionality from the traditional PSTN, combining Class 5 features with robust unified messaging and a carrier-grade softswitch platform that scales to millions of subscribers. Providing primary-line services over DSL, cable and fixed wireless broadband access networks, the Syion 426 lets carriers deliver such regulatory services as emergency lifeline, operator and lawful intercept. Services can be delivered to any phone or IP-enabled terminal, including "softphones," IP phones, PCs (through Netscape, Microsoft Outlook or NetMeeting) and PDAs.

Syndeo is privately held and has raised $23 million in funding from Redpoint Ventures, Brentwood Venture Capital and Thomas Weisel Partners. The company gained ISO 9001 Quality System Standard certification in March 2000. For more information, call 408-861-1000 or visit Syndeo's web site at www.syndeocorp.com.
