Convedia announces SIP Control Interface for CMS-6000 Media Server. Industrys first media server to concurrently support MGCP and SIP control interfaces on a single platform. ATLANTA, GA - October 16, 2001 - Convedia Corporation, a leading provider of next-generation media server solutions for the global communications market, today announced a native SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) control interface for its industry leading CMS-6000 Media Server. The new control interface option allows software developers and service providers’ internal development teams to use SIP as a device control protocol to access rich and scalable media processing building blocks for conferencing, IVR, network announcements, speech recognition and messaging applications. "Adding a SIP based control interface to the CMS-6000 makes it the industrys first multi-service, multi-protocol media server and demonstrates Convedia's continuing commitment to delivering the most advanced and feature rich media servers for the packet telephony marketplace," said Grant Henderson, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Strategy at Convedia. "As packet telephony evolves to larger and more sophisticated deployments it is clear that a mixture of control protocols will be used in the network." Today, most leading softswitches use MGCP for device control whereas application servers are split between MGCP and SIP device control. By supporting both control protocols concurrently on one CMS-6000 Media Server, Convedia allows service providers to fully leverage their investment in media server technologies, improving the return on investment and accelerating the introduction of new services and revenue streams. "Convedia continues to leverage their early entry in the Media Server market by raising the bar in terms of performance, features and functionality," said Tom Jenkins, Vice President of TeleChoice, a leading strategic telecom consulting firm. "Media server vendors who support SIP and MGCP offer their application server/softswitch partners maximum flexibility in addressing the needs of service providers." Convedias Media Servers are a key component of the emerging softswitch architecture and are required for a variety of traditional and emerging telecommunications services. They provide tones, announcements, audio bridging, DTMF collection, speech recognition and text to speech functionality for Class 4, Class 5 and innovative new network based services. The CMS-6000 supports IP and ATM networks and can be utilized in packet telephony networks based on the Softswitch, PacketCable and 2G/3G wireless architectures. "Convedia is a staunch supporter and active participant in the development of open standards for Media Server control," said Garland Sharratt, Chief Architect and Vice President of Business Development at Convedia. "We have been active in the International Softswitch Consortium and VoiceXML Forum, and more recently have become members of the Cable Labs PacketCable initiative as well as the SIP Forum. Open standards such as SIP, MGCP, MEGACO and VoiceXML are fundamental to unlocking the potential of packet telephony and Convedia is committed to leading the market in these areas." Convedia's SIP control interface for the CMS-6000 will be available in the first quarter of 2002. Convedia is showcasing its industry leading solutions at booth # 1211/1213 during Fall 2001 VON, October 16-18.
